4 More Ways to Inspire Your Kids' Creativity

Published 11/11/2020 to c/parenting by @Zergin

In our previous article, we looked at the four main ways parents can use to inspire creativity in kids which include: reading with them, creating their own stories, subscribing to a STEM box and teaching them a new skill. We felt that as a parent, you’d find it valuable and informative to know more ways of inspiring creativity in your kids. And so here are four more ways of doing just that – nurturing the creative juices in your little ones.

Let’s dive right in.

Do a science experiment

Collaborating on creative science projects with your child is a solid way to spike curiosity and interest in different scientific fields such as Chemistry, Ecology, Neurology, and so on. Such experiments play a huge role in helping kids understand the world around them, solve problems, and think critically. Carrying out science experiments at home which is a non-competitive environment relieves them of unnecessary pressure and can help in laying a firm foundation of what science disciplines they enjoy and would actually want to pursue. Encourage and support your kids once you find out what they’re truly passionate about. ScienceFun has tons of science experiment ideas for you to try out.

Let them create their own game

Having your kids create their own game either on a computer or using toys in real life helps them step out of their comfort zone and stretch their creative faculties. Making a game requires grit, innovation, and a whole new way of thinking. Getting your kids to create their own games doesn’t have to be complicated or overly expensive. Start them off by helping them create simple games such as making their own skittles or designing a basic board game. Blox 3D Junior and Lego worlds are excellent resources where tech-passionate kids can create simple games.

Learn a magic trick

The world of magic is intriguing to adults and kids alike. It’s impossible to talk about magic without incorporating imagination and creativity in the picture. Magic tricks drive kids to think critically, which in turn pricks their minds to more imagination and creativity. While it may take some time for them to learn complex tricks, teaching your kids the basic concepts of magic is a good start and can stir their curiosity. The magnetic pencil, disappearing coin and the bending spoon are all cool tricks to get them started in the world of magic. Check out MagicTricks for Kids for more awesome ideas.

Let them be bored

Multiple studies have shown that people, and kids too, will get more creative when they are bored. The wandering nature of our minds leads to day-dreaming which in turn sparks trails of creative thoughts. Unfortunately, in an age where gadgets and screens are the panaceas for all kids-related tantrums, realizing these benefits is getting harder by the day. It’s Ok for your kids to get bored. Kids are more likely to experiment, try out, or learn new ideas when their minds are not constantly scrolling down an iPad, solving a puzzle, or passively watching TV. Boredom presents a great opportunity for your kids to explore and innovate fun things to do during such a time.
