4 Ways to Inspire Your Kids' Creativity

Published 11/11/2020 to c/parenting by @Zergin

In an age where toys and entertainment companies are increasingly taking over children’s imaginative faculties by feeding them prefab characters, props, and images, it’s critical for parents to step up and foster creativity in their kids through alternative ways. Creativity is more of a way of thinking and not some innate talent which means parents can nurture their kids’ creative minds.

While directing kids to follow a set of instructions to solve a problem may be of some help, true creativity is all about letting them figure out things on their own. Such creativity helps kids to learn better, have more confidence, and even develop social skills.

Here are four ways to inspire your kids’ creativity that you can implement today.

Read with them

Reading with your kids as well as encouraging them to read on their own is a powerful way to foster imaginative thinking. Reading books that invoke fantasy and curiosity helps kids to form mental images in their minds thus strengthening their young creative minds. Giving out books as gifts to your kids, making a reading game, and tagging your kids to loiter at the library are all clever and fun ways of getting your kids to love books. Studies have shown that reading aloud to your kids helps with cognitive development in children which involves thought process creation, problem-solving, and remembering. Resources like Between The Lions have lots of folklore tales infused with musicals to make reading captivating.

Create your own stories

Coming up with stories from scratch with your child will go a long way in laying a solid foundation for your kid’s creativity. At first, it may be a bit difficult for them to think of any stories to write about and this is where you come in and boost them. You can suggest a character, a situation, or an event for them to write about. The easiest way to do this is by incorporating familiar characters like Cinderella and asking your child to imagine past the end, that is, what happened after Cinderella and the prince got married? Once they have a story down, have them illustrate it and create their own digital book on Zergin Press .

Subscribe to a STEM subscription box

STEM subscription boxes are designed to make learning fun and exciting for kids of all ages. With each subscription box focusing on a specific subject such as coding, chemistry labs, and building electronics among many others, anecdotal evidence has shown that such activities foster innovative thinking, creativity, and all-round individual development. Several subscription boxes exist that offer quality and affordable activities designed to help kids have fun studying science and other disciplines by practical application.

Teach them a new skill

For most kids, mastering any skill may take time and a lot of practice. This learning curve is particularly important in exercising the “muscles” of their minds which further expands their thinking. From planting seedlings to doing laundry, life skills are crucial in a child’s cognitive development. There are three ways to impart a new skill to your child: Modelling, step-by-step, or by giving instructions. Whichever route you choose, remember to give praise to your child’s progress.
